Every year hundreds of talented amateur cooks spend countless hours preparing entries for cookery classes and competitions at the Royal Adelaide Show and country shows across South Australia.

The Blue Ribbon Cookbook - recipes, stories and tips from prize-winning country show cooks, will be released by Wakefield Press during the Royal Adelaide Show. Put together with assistance from the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA and the Agricultural Societies Council of SA, it is believed to be the first publication to bring together the stories of South Australia's remaining agricultural shows and some of the volunteers who have made them a vibrant part of community life in this State for more than 150 years.

The book features the stories of more than 50 show cooks, ranging in age from 3 to 93 and their prize-winning recipes. A highlight of the book are tips from both the cooks and experienced show judges about how to make the recipes work – tricks of the trade not usually found in recipe methods, but often handed down from generation to generation.

Joining us in a fun-filled celebration of show cooks and their surprising stories will be author Liz Harfull, and three of the cooks featured in the book – Mary Starkey from Mount Pleasant; Angaston winemaker Carol Riebke and RAHS treasurer and rosarian, Walter Duncan who comes from one of the State's most prominent show families.

Liz is well known to RMSA members for her work as Australia's representative to the International Federation for Agricultural Journalists. Originally from Mil Lel where her father helped set up the local show, she has more than 25 years' experience as a journalist, freelance writer, editor and public relations consultant. Liz has won numerous awards as both a journalist and consultant.

As a Churchill Fellow she travelled overseas studying communication techniques that encourage farmers to take up new technology and best practice. A keen amateur cook and show prize-winner herself, Liz lives in the Adelaide Hills and thinks nothing of whipping up afternoon tea for 20 friends as a way of relaxing.
